On This Day… The Madness Of King George!

Written by: George Chittenden : 30 Jun 2019

It was on this day, 29th January, back in 1820 when George III, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland died at Windsor Castle. George III was extremely popular in Britain, despite the fact his reign was marked by several military conflicts involving his kingdoms, the rest of Europe, places farther afield in Africa, the Americas and even Asia.

Unfortunately, in his later life he suffered from mental illness. The exact diagnosis remains unknown, but it’s been suggested that he had the blood disease porphyria. In 1810, a regency was established, and George III's eldest son, George, Prince of Wales, ruled as Prince Regent.

On this day, following his father’s death, the Prince Regent succeeded his father, ruling as George IV. His father was buried on February 16th in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

We promote history by...

offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality. Please join others who support our free projects by giving a small donation. We can only continue our great work with your help.
