On This Day… The Trial Of Joan Of Arc

Written by: George Chittenden : 24 May 2019

It was on this day, 28th May back in 1431 when a lady dressed in men’s clothes, an act which resulted in her being burned at the stake just a few days later. Wearing the men’s clothes meant she had relapsed into heresy, which gave the court justification to have her executed. The lady is of course, Joan of Arc. Joan was a French peasant who had heard voices in her head since she was a young girl. Some believe she was blessed by god whilst others believe she suffered from a mental health condition, ranging from epilepsy to schizophrenia. On May 24th she’d been taken to a scaffold set up in the cemetery of a church and told she would be burned unless she signed a document renouncing her visions and agreeing to stop wearing soldiers' clothing. The outfit she wore consisted of a tunic, hosen, and long boots that went up to the waist.

According to Joan she wore it for the protection of her virginity as she feared being raped by the guards looking after her. Joan of Arc who is a fascinating historical character was being held in a tower at the castle of Rouen, throughout her trial for heresy. Back In 1429, under what she considered to be the command of God, she inspired a series of stunning military victories against the English. Unfortunately, she was eventually captured in 1430 and sold to the Burgundians, who were allied with the English. The Burgundians, led by Philip III, sold her to the English for 10,000 livres. Surprisingly, years after she was burned at the stake she was exonerated and in 1920 was declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
