On This Day… The Day Hitler Became German!
Written by: George Chittenden : 07 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 25th February, back in 1932 when Adolf Hitler became a German citizen, a move that would reap devastating consequences in the years to come. The man who used race and German heritage to give citizenship to, and remove it from, large groups of people was born in Austria.
He immigrated to Germany in 1913 and renounced his Austrian citizenship in 1925. As someone so obsessed with ethnic cleansing and ancestry, Hitler was quite vague about his own descent. Since the war DNA tests on saliva samples taken from dozens of his relatives have suggested that Hitler is likely to have had Jewish and African roots.
Becoming a German citizen allowed Adolf Hitler to run for office, and in just over two years he became Führer und Reichskanzler (leader and chancellor), allowing him to eventually lead a military campaign that destroyed borders and entire populations across Europe.

offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality.
