On This Day… The First Human Killed By A Robot!
Written by: George Chittenden : 30 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 25th January, back in 1979 when a robot killed a human for the very first time! The victim, Robert Williams, was a factory worker who worked at the Ford Motor Company casting plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
The robot was part of system that moved material from one part of the factory to another. When the system started running slowly, Robert climbed into the storage rack to retrieve the parts but was struck in the head by the arm of the 1-ton production-line robot and was killed instantly.
Nowadays, death by robot isn’t that unusual. In 2005 in the UK alone there were seventy-seven robot-related accidents.
