On This Day… The End Of The Elizabethan Era!
Written by: George Chittenden : 09 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 24th March, back in 1603 when Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland died. Following her death King James VI of Scotland ascended to the throne, uniting England and Scotland under a single British monarch. Elizabeth was one of England’s greatest monarchs. her reign witnessed the English renaissance, and writers like William Shakespeare, but it wasn’t all fun and games.
As Queen she also faced threats like the Spanish Armada, the greatest naval force in the world at the time. She encouraged voyages of discovery like Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the world and turned England into a world power on every front. Elizabeth was interred in Westminster Abbey, in a tomb shared with her half-sister, Mary I.
Now are you ready for the confusing part? So, she actually died on the last day of the year in 1602. Back in those days, New Year's Day was celebrated on the 25th March. This changed in the 1750s when calendars were reformed. The modern convention is to use the old calendar for the date and month while using the new for the year.
