On This Day

On This Day… The Battle Of Los Angeles!

Written by: George Chittenden : 07 Jul 2019

It was on this day, 24th February, back in 1942 when an unusual incident began over Los Angeles and lasted into the early hours of the 25th. The history books refer to it as either The Battle of Los Angeles, or The Great Los Angeles Air Raid.

Believing the city was under enemy attack from the Japanese, an anti-aircraft artillery barrage was fired, and when the firing started others joined in. Speaking at a press conference shortly after the event, the Secretary of the U.S Navy referred to the incident as a false alarm, and many have since attributed it to "war nerves", which is understandable as the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbour only months earlier.

In 1949, the U.S Coast Artillery Association identified that the initial cause was a meteorological balloon, which had been mistaken for the enemy, however speculation exists, and some conspiracy theorists believe the targets were actually extra-terrestrial spacecrafts.

We promote history by...

offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality. Please join others who support our free projects by giving a small donation. We can only continue our great work with your help.
