On This Day… A Very Important Day!
Written by: George Chittenden : 30 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 24th January, back in 1935 when canned beer made its debut. The American Can Company, the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company delivered two-thousand cans of Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream Ale to faithful Krueger drinkers in Richmond, Virginia.
An attempt to can beer was made in 1909, but it was unsuccessful, and the American Can Company had to wait for the end of Prohibition in the United States before it tried again. Finally, in 1933, after two years of research, a can was developed that was pressurised and worked.
Competitors soon copied, and by the end of 1935, over 200 million cans had been produced and sold. Their popularity exploded during World War II, when American brewers shipped millions of cans of beer to soldiers overseas.
