On This Day… Queen Elizabeth And Her Coronation!
Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 15th January, back in 1559, when the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 1st took place at Westminster Abbey, London. Queen Elizabeth had ascended the throne at the age of twenty-five following the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary I, on 17th November 1558.
On the day of the coronation Elizabeth enjoyed a state procession from the Tower of London through the western suburbs to the Palace of Westminster. After the ceremony a huge feast took place at Westminster Hall for two-hundred guests who were seated at four large tables.
The organisers of the feast rode around the hall mounted on horseback. The feast which had started around 3pm, ended at 9pm in the evening when the queen left for Whitehall.
