On This Day… Thanks For The Poor Security!
Written by: George Chittenden : 02 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 12th February, back in 1994 when one of the world's best-known paintings was stolen from the National Gallery in Oslo, Norway. The painting was one of Edvard Munch’s scream paintings.
Interestingly, four versions of ‘Scream’ exist, created as both paintings and pastels, by the Norwegian expressionist between 1893 and 1910. The version in the photo above was stolen, after it had been moved down to a second-story gallery. The cheeky art thieves even left a note reading "Thanks for the poor security".
In March 1994 the gallery refused to pay a ransom demand of a million US dollars to get the painting back, but thankfully the painting was recovered on May 7th after a successful sting operation involving the British police and the Getty Museum.
