On This Day… The Great Blizzard Of 1888
Written by: George Chittenden : 08 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 11th March, back in 1888 when one of the most famous and severe snowstorms in American history began. The Great Blizzard of 1888 lasted for two and a half days and brought heavy snow, hurricane-force winds and freezing temperatures.
It paralysed the East Coast and killed at least four-hundred people. It effected New York quite severely, and at least half the deaths occurred there. The snow blocked roads and railway lines, and the wind took down telegraph and telephone lines, bringing nearly all communication to a halt.
Many people were trapped in their houses for up to a week. It took days for the residents to dig out from under the snow, and weeks for the city to fully recover.

We promote history by...
offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality.
Please join others who support our free projects by giving a small donation. We can only continue our great work with your help.
