On This Day… The Lindbergh Kidnapping!
Written by: George Chittenden : 07 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 1st March, back in 1932 when the twenty-month-old son of the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh and the author Anne Morrow Lindbergh was kidnapped from their home near Hopewell, New Jersey. The child was taken at around 9pm, but it took around an hour for the child’s absence to be discovered. Following a search of the property a ransom note demanding $50,000 was found on the nursery windowsill.
The kidnapping quickly became the biggest news story in America at the time. The New Jersey State Police assumed charge of the investigation, and even Al Capone who was in prison offered to help return the baby. A ransom was paid on April 2nd, but tragically the child’s remains were discovered in a grove of trees not far from the Lindbergh’s property. Eventually after tracking the serial numbers on the ransom money paid an arrest was made.
Richard Hauptmann, an immigrant with a criminal record was found with over $14,000 of the ransom money hidden at his property. Hauptmann was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. He was executed in the electric chair at the New Jersey State Prison on April 3rd, 1936.
