On This Day… The Sinking Of The Lusitania

Written by: George Chittenden : 04 May 2019

It was on this day, 7th May back in 1915 when a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the RMS Lusitania, a British ocean liner travelling from New York to Liverpool. The incident happened less than a year after World War One had erupted across Europe. The Lusitania was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-20 off Kinsale, Ireland, and sank in eighteen minutes. She was carrying 1,266 passengers and a crew of 696. Over 750 people managed to survive, but unfortunately 1,198 people tragically lost their lives.

The incident contributed to the American entry into WWI and became an iconic symbol in military recruiting campaigns of why the war was being fought. Disagreements over whether the ship was a legitimate military target raged back and forth throughout the war. When she was sunk, she was carrying over four million rounds of small-arms ammunition, almost 5,000 shrapnel shell casings and 3,240 brass percussion fuses.
